The Day in the Park
Christmas Parade
Events sponsored each year include:
------ The Day in the Park ------
Held on the first Saturday of June this festival features a day filled with food, fun and entertainment. Started in 1976 as a celebration of the dedication of the State Street Park, The Day in the Park has become a long standing tradition for Delmar. Besides a craft fair, great local food and live bands, The Day in the Park has taken on an ever growing level of activity for children including games such ring and coin toss, darts and beanbag throws, putting golf, a moonwalk, bumble bee train rides and fire engine rides among others.
The Day in the Park has become one of the largest fundraising days for local service organizations such as the Kiwanis, Lions Club, Delmar High School Band Boosters and others. It is the single largest fund raising for the Chamber of Commerce.
Many community groups come together to sponser prizes and volunteers. As the craft fair and children's area grow, we've seen a dramatic increase of "newcomers" from outlying areas including tourists and race fans who make the Delmar Day in the Park the way to start off summer on the Delmarva Peninsula.
------ Citizen of the Year ------
One of the largest annual events for Delmar is the Citizen of the Year Award. The Citizen of the Year is chosen in October. To honor the recipent, the Chamber sponsors an awards banquet which has become one of the most popular events of the year.
Each of the recipients has been honored for their lifelong contribution to the quality of life in Delmar. Click here for a list of past Citizen of Year recipents.
------ Carnival of Lights -------
Each year as we prepare for the Christmas season a special lighting ceremony takes place in the park to dedicate the spirit and the "Light" of the season.
Christmas carols, candle lighting, activities for the children and hot chocolate for everyone.
A "special guest" arrives just in the "nick" of time to talk to all the kids - young and old.
------ Christmas Parade ------
Every holiday season is marked by a celebration. Delmar's is their own Christmas parade.
Marching bands, floats, carollers, car clubs, fire departments from all over the region vie for prizes and trophies.
------ The Dr. Wayne C. Bastian Scholarship ------
The Chamber has for years given a scholarship to a graduate of Delmar High School. In 1996 the Chamber honored long time School Superintendent and Chamber member Dr. Wayne C. Bastian as he retired from service with naming the annual scholarship in his honor.
Particulars on the criteria for the scholarship can be recieved by contacting the Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber meets monthly, hosting information seminars. In the past, speakers from such groups as The Small Business Administration, various financial institutions, Sussex County Tourism, local legislators, and businesses have given talks on financial investments, small business loans, business legislation, zoning and codes, internet advertising and employment opportunities among others topics.
These seminars are geared to giving the business community useful information in today's fast moving economy.

Along with this committment, the Chamber provides a variety of brochures, information packets, maps, and cooperative local advertising packages to Chamber members for distribution at points of business, tourism, and community resource.
