Delmar, Delaware and Delmar, Maryland
One unique little town, truely too big for one state sits astride U.S. Route 13, the major north-south arterial on the Delmarva Peninsula, and Route 54, border between Maryland and Delaware.
While trucking now competes with ConRail freight, automobiles have long since replaced the passenger railroad cars. Delmar is home to several successful independent trucking transport and service companies. America's love for the automobile can be seen in Delmar on a weekly basis.
The Route13 Dragway and it's sister operation - Delaware International Speedway has grown into the third largest visitor attraction in the State of Delaware.
Long sustained agricultural and fishing industry on the Peninsula is now rivaled by tourism. Delmar sits 4 hours away from New York City, 2 hours from Philadelphia, 3 hours from either Baltimore or Washington, D.C. and 3 hours away from Norfolk, Va.
According to the former Executive Director of Sussex County Convention and Tourism Commision, Cindy Small "... more people chose to visit Delaware last year (1997) than Hawaii .... Delaware enjoyed the economic impact of nearly 1.3 million visitors ..."
